Kodi Kitchen and Mandy Musgrave Interview

This interview is part of a series of interviews:

  • Interviews – COWGIRL UP and SOUTH OF NOWHERE Cast
  • Kodi Kitchen Interview
  • Mandy Musgrave and Matt Cohen Interview
  • Nicole Travolta Interview

Kodi Kitchen, Cowgirl UpWe continued talking briefly then; Mandy Musgrave and Matt Cohen arrived. They were a little early so they were content to allow Kodi and me to go on, after taking a moment for introductions and hellos.

Next, Kodi told me about her upcoming movie. “There’s a movie that will be finished in June, I think. It’s called Verlaine jackverlaine.com. We shot it about a year ago, and I’m the female lead. Robert Seay, Mark Rolston, and Tom Sizemore are my male counterparts.

As with all of my interviews, these were not conducted in a rigid format, wherein all the questions would be arranged in a certain fashion to be asked one right after another leaving no room for spontaneity. That’s not my style, and it doesn’t sound enjoyable for the person being interviewed either. This format has suited me well in the past, and it paid off again, as it allowed me to backtrack a bit for my next question. Was Cowgirl Up the first time she had played a lesbian role? “No, my very first movie ever. I went to Georgia for a month, and that was my first –2001 Maniacs.”

The four of us began talking. One of the coolest things about this portion of the interviews was just listening to them talk. They even asked each other questions. So, there were times when all I had to do was listen.

Mandy, was curious. So, she followed up my question by asking,  “So, the first thing you ever did…you played a lesbian, but you never kissed, or did anything?”

Kodi replied, “We did (kiss in the first audition). Before that, I had only modeled. But I auditioned and booked it, and then I went to Georgia to film.” Playing a lesbian had to be an interesting way to get into the business, definitely awkward at times.

Since Kodi had just told us about her first time playing a lesbian role on screen, she wanted to ask Mandy about her experiences with friend and co-star Gabrielle Christian at the beginning of South of Nowhere. “We had met through the auditioning process, but we had become friends through it.” Mandy responded.

The two discussed how that awkwardness fades quickly and it becomes much easier just to do your job. “One take after that first kiss, you’re like ‘Oh, come on, bring it!’” Kodi said. “Yeah, its better with women. It’s more technical,” Mandy added.

Below are Kodi’s final remarks.

To all the fans of Cowgirl Up, Thank you!!! Thank you for supporting something we all work so hard to create. We had an amazing time doing it and it couldn’t be made possible without you.  So thank you, thank you!  So keep watching and if you are ever lost in life, just remember to trust yourself, cowgirl up, and you’ll find your way!

Kodi

One of the reasons I ask people for all of the ways you can contact them is so that you can be sure that you are communicating with the real person. Bringing that up prompted Mandy to mention that she is glad that there are people and sites out there who set the record straight because, she does not have any public social networking sites anymore. I mentioned how our Twitter has a list of all of the real South of Nowhere cast and crew accounts.  “It’s good with sites like yours, and people like you, who will say, these are the real ones.” We’re in the process of completing a list for Cowgirl Up as well.
